So.
I recently submitted "The Power of a Name" into my portfolio in my poetry class back in May.
Normally I am passive, (except to those who know me) but for this poem.....the comments I received from the pseudo-teacher pissed me off. She wrote that it confused her, because the ending line contradicted the rest, where the son actually lived up to his name rather than the opposite effect it had on the sisters Faith, Hope, and Love. Apparently she did not understand the BIGGER importance of the TITLE of said poem. "The Power of a Name" is exactly that. The sisters were influenced by their names to act out and apart from them, while the second-generation was forced to perpetuate the "killer" title.
To me, the whole poem was a variation on The Princess and the Pauper idea, where the princess grows tired of being royal and vice versa for the pauper. It is a change of perspective. People want what they do not have, they want to be different from or the same as everyone else. Faith became a scientist. Hope became cynical. Love became loveless. Killer, on the other hand, became a killer. In that aspect I see what she meant, but the opposites effect was not what I was trying to emphasize. I intended to show the power of a name. And it irritates me that she was confused by that fact, when I made it perfectly obvious.
Still,
perceptions differ.
I just felt like ranting.
